3/4CL 2024 - 2025

Mrs Collins

Welcome to Year 3/4

Welcome to our Class Page!

I am Mrs Collins and I teach the class along with Mrs Lambert and Mrs Lund.

Our foundation work this term will be "The Ancient Greeks and their Influence on the Western World'. We will find out where Greece is in Europe and about the key cities of this ancient civilisation. We will also learn about their beliefs, trade and daily lives. In Science this term, we will learn about "Sounds and the Ear" followed by "States of Matter" (solids, liquids and gases).

English

In English, we will be basing our writing around the picture book 'Journey' then reading 'Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet', a really popular book, with the children. We will practise key writing skills by completing narrative and non-fiction pieces linked to our work on Ancient Greece. We will practise key English skills and complete narrative and non-fiction pieces of writing based on the books we read. Children will also practise reading and comprehension skills every day. Spelling is taught in school, with words sent home for your information. Please support your child by hearing them read each night at home too. Reading raffle tickets are given every time your child's reading diary is signed and returned!

Maths

Over the course of the term, we will be exploring the place value of 4-digit numbers (Y4) and 3-digit numbers (Y3), then adding and subtracting with numbers up to 10,000 (Y4) and 1,000 (Y3). It would help the children if they could learn to tell the time at home (analogue and digit to the nearest minute) to support learning in school as it takes lots of practice. Every week the children will be completing their X-Factor Maths, which focuses on fluency in times tables and arithmetic. In June, Year 4 children must complete a times tables test to check they know all their tables from 1-12x. In Y3, we revisit the 2x, 5x, 10x, then focus on the 3x, 4x and 8x times tables and their related division facts. We have TTRockstars for children to use at home and the 'Hit the Button' game is also popular and helps build number sense and fluency. Please support your child by practising the times table that they have been set that week and doing the Monday Maths which is given every Monday on class dojo.

Supporting your child at home

If you can do anything at home, please support your child by hearing them read as often as you can. We will try to hear them read in school and support their learning with whole class comprehension but 1:1 reading really does help them progress in all subjects. We will learn the times tables but little extras at home will help.  Children will also have half-termly topic homework activities to choose from.

PE this term

Tuesday - Y4 will go swimming so children need to bring their kit. Y3 will remain in school for PE so children need to come in wearing their kit - plain black trousers, plain white t-shirt and their school jumper.

Friday - The class will have PE together so all children should come in wearing their kit..

If you have any questions or concerns please contact either myself or Mrs Lambert on the door at the beginning or end of the day.  Alternatively, please use the lks2@etchells.stockport.sch.uk  email address and I will get back to you.

Many thanks

Mrs Collins
