Curriculum Intent
At Etchells Primary, our music curriculum intends to inspire creativity and self-expression by enabling listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing and composing through exposure to diverse musical experiences. We hope to encourage our children on their musical journey and give them the opportunity to connect with others both within school and the wider community. We aim to ignite a lifelong passion for music and ensure our children understand the value and importance of all types of musical styles.
Music is a great way for children to express themselves and as such is a very important part of a child's education. At Etchells Primary School, children enjoy their lessons and look forward to projects covered, especially their weekly whole school singing, school concerts and performances throughout the year. We have a sound system and software that provides a wealth of upbeat songs with the lyrics that children can sing along to. I always love to hear the sound of children's singing voices as it travels down the corridor from the hall!
It is important that children can develop their creativity whilst also improving their music skills. At Etchells we follow the National Curriculum programmes of study and also the online Charanga scheme that ensure there is progression of skills across the key phases, including using tuned percussion. Children are also encouraged to evaluate their own music and that of others.
Learning about the lives and listening to the work of other composers and musicians is also a great way to inspire children so that they can make links with their own music.
Children have celebrated Music Week by sharing different genres of music learned in their lessons. Click on the video links below to watch and listen to the children being musicians as our portfolio develops.
