Intent
Through our PE lessons and sporting opportunities children develop personal characteristics such as resilience and independence. They set their own personal challenges and are encouraged to aspire to reach their full potential across a range of different sports. We plan and teach PE with the same rigour as other curriculum areas, recognising its importance in future life. By actively teaching our children about a sense of fair play, they learn to appreciate competition and accept winning or losing whilst giving 100%. P.E aims to develop students' physical competence, knowledge of movement, safety and their ability to use these to perform in a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle. It also develops students' confidence and generic skills - especially those of collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation.
Implementation
Our P.E curriculum is carefully planned by our staff, in line with our skills progression and using P.E Passport, to provide learning opportunities that ensure all pupils make good progress. Using the STEP (space, task, equipment and people) framework, we enable children to be challenged or supported through adapting the space, task, equipment or number of people involved in the activity. Children evaluate and reflect upon their own performance as well as the success of their peers and are also encouraged to set their own challenges in order to achieve a personal best. Teachers enable children to practise and perform in a range of styles such as individual, paired, group and whole class situations. Teachers ensure that continuous assessment is completed in the skills file to keep track of all children’s progress and use the data to inform future practice.

At Etchells, the children enjoy taking part in a wide range of sports during their lessons including: basketball, netball, cricket, rounders, football, tag rugby, tennis and swimming. Classes are timetabled to make full use of our extensive field and separate 'ball court', as well as our indoor hall to teach the gymnastics and dance elements of the currciulum. The children benefit from working with a variety of different Sports Specialists including coaches from Manchester City Football Club, Dance Education Artists and local tennis and tri-golf coaches.
We plan an extensive programme of after school sporting activities including Netball, Athletics, Multi-sports and boys and girls Football which are all extremely popular. We also give all children the opportunity to take part in competitive tournaments and festivals alongside other schools from across the borough.
Etchells regularly take part in national sporting events such as The Daily Mile, Sustrans Big Pedal, Joe Wicks' School Workout and much more. During Sport Relief 2018, the children all participated in Etchells' Indoor Cycling Challenge to see how far they could pedal on an exercise bike throughout the week, which helped to raise a massive £1460 for Sport Relief. We also have regular vists from "Freddy Fit" which is enjoyed by all children from Nursery to Year 6, and helps to promote healthy lifestyles.
