Foundations for Art in EYFS
In Nursery the children will explore different materials freely, in order to develop their ideas about how to use them and what to make. Through continuous provision they will develop their own ideas and then decide which materials to use to express them. When junk modelling they may join different materials and explore different textures. As they learn to hold writing implements they will be encouraged to create closed shapes with continuous lines, and begin to use these shapes to represent objects. As their skills progress they may draw with increasing complexity and detail, such as representing a face with a circle and including details of facial features. They may use drawing to represent ideas like movement or loud noises, and will be encouraged to show different emotions in their drawings and paintings, like happiness, sadness, fear etc. when using a range of different wet and dry media they will be given opportunities to explore colour and colour mixing.
By Reception children at the expected level of development will safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function. Through displays and their learning journals they will share their creations and be encouraged to explain the process they have used. When participating in role play they may make use of props and materials when exploring stories and themes.
By KS1 pupils should be taught: to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products When exploring the work of other artists and designers they may use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Through experimentation and the teaching of art skills they should develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. They should be able to talk about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.
